You do not need to be a professional calligrapher, painter, or conservator before beginning. Mounting is closely connected with Chinese calligraphy and painting, but it is also an independent traditional craft with its own materials, tools, techniques, and working methods.
What Should a Beginner Learn First?
The first step is not speed. It is understanding materials.
A beginner needs to gradually understand questions such as:
- How does Xuan paper react to moisture?
- How does paste consistency affect the paper?
- How much pressure should be applied with a mounting brush?
- Why can wrinkles appear when backing a painting?
- How do paper, silk, paste, moisture, drying, and hand pressure interact?
These details form the foundation of traditional hand mounting.
